It’s January. It’s that time of year where we look back at what we did well (and not so well) last year, and resolve to do better in the new year.
So how did 2014 turn out for you?
If you’re not ready to talk about it, I’ll go first. 2014 was tough. Some external forces beyond my control impacted my ability to focus on Lawducate and I missed my business goals. I was angry with myself for letting things get out of my control. I was frustrated with my inability to execute when times were tough.
And just when I thought things were getting back on track, 2015 started out with another BIG family emergency.
I could once again let this latest trauma take over, distract me, and push my dreams for Lawducate aside, but not this year. I am determined to handle this latest emergency differently.
Things happen that are outside of my control, but I still have control over how I respond. So I will. My loved one needs my love and support, but he doesn’t need me to sacrifice my goals and dreams for him to recover.
In 2015, I will set boundaries around my work time. I will dedicate my time to growing my ideas and my business. I will fill up my calendar with the new and exciting work I’m committing to put out into the world.
How about you? Did you end 2014 on a high note with a healthy docket and bank account? Are you proud of the work you did and the clients you helped? Is there room for improvement? Was it a train wreck and it’s time for a complete overhaul?
If 2014 didn’t turn out quite like you hoped, I’ve got some good news. It’s 2015. Turn the page and start fresh.
If you don’t want to repeat the mistakes you made last year, it’s time to be honest with your self. Take a good hard look back at 2014.
1. Make a list of your accomplishments.
Some of my 2014 accomplishments include:
· Attending some great legal conferences where I was able to introduce Lawducate to a lot of the right people.
· Setting up my website and creating an awesome animation video.
· Having my workshop proposal accepted for the RI Bar Association Annual Conference this June.
2. Make a list of what didn’t work out so well.
My disappointments include:
· Not blogging and neglecting my social media accounts;
· Inability to offer even one class;
· Lack of direction and focus when I did work.
3. Think about why things didn’t work out so well?
In my case, I got caught up in a series of family-related health issues. I was distracted and worked on the business sporadically. I was unable to focus and build momentum.
4. What do you resolve to do differently this year?
Personally, I’m taking responsibility for how I spend my time this year. I’m going to get a lot better at setting goals and planning out how to achieve them. I’m also committing to finding my authentic voice in my business and my life.
I will not repeat last year’s mistakes.
If you don’t like what you see in the rearview mirror, what are you going to do to make this year different? Even if 2014 was a good year, where can you improve so you can make 2015 even better?
If something isn’t working for you, it’s time to change what you’re doing.
